A Alsspec Custom-made extruded aluminum profile for a sliding door was exactly what the designers of a high quality retirement complex in Taren Point, NSW wanted.

The Jackson Teece-designed building was a new addition to Anglicare’s Woolooware Shores Retirement Village and the first part of a three-stage expansion project at the site. While the first stage will accommodate 42 senior citizens’ apartments and 48 care beds for the elderly, the remaining two stages will include another five buildings and another 140 independent apartments in one, two and three-room configurations.

The designers were looking for a novel solution in which fly screen doors and glazed sliding doors are housed in a single extruded aluminum frame. Using its customer-specific aluminum extrusion expertise, Alspec has developed the new combination of sliding door and fly screen to provide safe and protected access to balconies and inner courtyards.

Custom extrusion is an inexpensive way to create complex cross-sections for specific applications that are then easily assembled with other components. In this case, the fly screen frame was integrated into a single frame right next to the ProGlide High Performance sliding door, eliminating the need for the usual “add-on” area for guiding the screen.

The ProGlide sliding doors with the flush-fitting sill option, which enables a smooth transition from the inside to the outside area and is suitable for residents of all mobility levels, were selected as a further supplement suitable for the elderly and elderly care sector.

Alsspec’s custom extrusion solution will now be used for all future buildings.

In addition, Alspec windows and doors were chosen throughout the project, not only because of their versatility, but also because of the location’s proximity to the sea and the weather. The coastal location of the senior village required good weather and corrosion resistance of important components. Alspec’s aluminum frames are made from architectural grade aluminum which is very corrosion resistant and exceptionally strong which makes them perfect for this project.

Excellent weather properties were another requirement that was taken into account when selecting Alsspec products. The McArthur Evo center pocket frame includes self-draining sills to keep water out, while the 50mm awning windows utilize the overlapping outer and inner seals to allow weatherproof openings. The ProGlide sliding doors have rocker panels with slide-in rails to keep water out, and Hawkesbury’s commercial multipurpose doors have Weatherseal technology to keep wind and rain out and make them airtight.

Alspec products used in the project included McArthur Evo 101.6mm center pocket frames, Hawkesbury commercial multi-fold doors, ProGlide high performance sliding doors, and awning and casement windows, all with a charcoal pearl finish.

Do you think there is no such thing as the perfect window or door solution for your building project? It’s time to consult with Alsspec’s custom aluminum extrusion team.
